The idea is from Bad Water Basin is an endorheic basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America, with an elevation of 279 ft (85 m) below sea level. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 United States, is only 84.6 miles (136 km) to the north west.
The time span I created in this space has reached thousands of years. 4000 years ago, here used to be a 10-meter depth lake area full of life signs. As minerals along two sides of the mountain were rushed by stream in early years into the lake, salt content of the lake became higher and higher. Afterwards, as the weather became hot and dry, rainfall and evaporation became imbalance and the lake water was evaporated, which formed the current snow-white salt basin.
This installation records the emotional change and images that flashed in my head when I was reaching bad water. This salt crystal basin has left people the impression of desolation beauty. I have never experienced such peace and happiness deep in my heart. In my brain, I feel like seeing an endless lake, migrant bird flying from far distance and fish jumping out of the water surface, which is full of life signs. Thus, I create this work, trying to bring my audiences back to thousands of years ago to truly experience this basin.
he work consists of three parts. The first part describes the lake area in the past; the second part depicts the process of water evaporation due to geographical change; in the last part, humans finally arrive in this dry lake area which has become basin. Thus, I utilize the sound of nature, lighting reflection and human behavior to reconstruct the thousands of years of change in this natural scenery.
In this piece, my personal emotion is gradually pushed to the climax though the visual change. You may find peace, sorrow, respect for the nature or more complicated emotional changes. I hope audiences could find an emotional exist and eventually understand the cruelty and affection of the great nature.
